What is growth?
The physical changes of the body. Children grow in height and weight.
What is development?
The psychological and social changes of a person. Children learn to talk and play with other children.
What are tasks?
Tasks are milestones or levels that must be completed before a person can move to the next stage. For
example, the developmental task for a one-year old is walking. The developmental task for later adulthood is
retirement.
You will need to know the stages of development as listed in Table 5-1. Most of these you already know.

What is the developmental task for older adulthood?
Preparing for one own’s death.
Scenario: An elderly resident is visiting with his grandson. The resident says, “Grandson, I want you to have
my fishing rod. My father gave it to me on my twelfth birthday.” What task is the resident working on?
Very old age; developmental task of preparing for death.

What is Maslow’s hierarchy?
Abraham Maslow looked at human needs and them arranged them in a pyramid to show that some needs are
more basic than others.
What must happen before a person can progress to the next level in Maslow’s pyramid?
The needs of the level before must be met before a person can move up a level. For example, if a child is
hungry, he may be willing to risk his safety to get something to eat. Hunger trumps safety.
What does safety and security mean?
Feeling safe and secure, both physically and emotionally.
What is self-esteem?
How a person thinks of themselves and what they think other people think about them.
What is self-actualization?
When a person reaches his or her highest potential. This is usually a goal that takes a lifetime.
