Incorporating Cultural
Sensitivity

To incorporate cultural sensitivity, we must first know what that is. Cultural
sensitivity is the ability to understand, appreciate, and respect the
differences in cultures and beliefs of others and be aware of your own
cultural biases, leading to more inclusive and productive interactions. (APA,
2018) Understanding and appreciating cultural differences, you recognize
that people from different backgrounds may have different values, norms,
and beliefs and that these differences are not inherently right or wrong.

Being aware of your cultural biases, you understand how your cultural
background shapes your perspectives and behaviors. Cultural sensitivity
means showing respect and empathy for people with different perspectives
than your own. Cultural sensitivity takes adaptability, which is being open
to learning about other cultures and adapting your communication and
behaviors accordingly. This leads to inclusivity and productivity, where
everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their cultural
background.

Why is cultural sensitivity so important?

You can build trust and a strong rapport with your clients through cultural
sensitivity. When you find common ground or shared interests, you also
demonstrate respect for your clients' backgrounds and values.
Understanding cultural nuances in different communication styles can
prevent misunderstandings and ensure that your message is received
positively. Failing to acknowledge cultural differences can lead to
unintentional offense or potentially damaging business relationships.
Acknowledgment leads to a more positive and productive business
environment, better outcomes, and stronger partnerships.
