Full Story Summary
Macbeth begins with three witches predicting that Macbeth will become the
Thane of Cawdor and eventually the King of Scotland. When the first prophecy
comes true, Macbeth starts believing the witches. Encouraged by Lady Macbeth,
he murders King Duncan while he is a guest in their castle. Macbeth becomes
king, but guilt and fear begin to destroy him.
Macbeth worries that Banquo’s descendants will become kings, so he arranges
for Banquo to be murdered. Banquo’s ghost later appears at a feast, frightening
Macbeth and revealing his guilt. Macbeth becomes more violent and cruel as he
tries to protect his power.
