oversight by an MD or DO

• 2 components:
- The right to prescribe independently (not subject to rules
requiring physician supervision or collaboration)

- The right to prescribe without limitation (prescribe any drugs,
including controlled drugs, with the exception of schedule I
drugs, which have no current medical use)

• PAs required to have an affiliation with a physician in order to
practice & prescribe

• APRNs full prescriptive authority depends on their legal right to
prescribe without a supervisory or collaborative requirement

- Educated to practice & prescribe independently without supervision
- Certain states require collaboration with or under a physician
(some physicians can limit the types of drugs the APRN can
prescribe)

- State laws may place additional restrictions with regard to
controlled drugs

- Collaborative States: Alabama, Arkansas, California,
Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana,
Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts (CNP, CNS,
CRNA), Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New
Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South
Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia,
Wisconsin

, - Independent States: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho,
Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts (CNM), Minnesota,
Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York,
North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah,

Board of Nursing, State Board of Medicine, or State Board of
Pharmacy, as determined by each state)

- Federal government has no control over prescriptive authority

Chapter 3: Promoting Positive Outcomes of Drug Therapy

- Medication Education Components:
• Medication Name
- Avoid patient referring to medication by the usage & not the
name (i.e. “blood pressure pill” - increases risk for medication
errors)

- Encourage patients to keep a list of their medications on their
person at all times (include both generic & brand name)

• Knowing the generic name empowers the patient to catch
medication errors in the event that two different providers
prescribe the same generic drug under different brand names

• Purpose
• Dosing Regimen
- Drug quantity & number of tablets or millimeters per dose
needs to be reviewed with the patient (will also be on the
prescription label)

- Be specific with timing (i.e. “four times a day” vs “once a day”)
