Student Study Support Guide
This guide is for learning support only. Students must use the textbook, understand the concepts, and write
their final answers in their own words.

Purpose: Study support only. Use these ideas to develop original answers.
The guide covers software process models, testing, agile methods, requirements, use cases,
architecture, and the Mentcare system. The main textbook source is Sommerville, especially Chapters
1-6.
Question 1 - Generic Software Process Models
Marks: 16
Read: Sommerville pp. 25-26 and pp. 45-52.
What the question wants: Students must choose a suitable software process model for each system
and explain why it fits.
Key textbook idea: Different systems need different software engineering approaches. Safety-critical,
business, interactive, and experimental systems should not all use the same development model.
System Suitable model to consider Why it fits
Antilock braking system Waterfall / plan-driven model Safety-critical embedded system. Needs careful
specification, design, testing, and validation
before release.
Virtual reality Evolutionary prototyping / Requirements may be unclear. Users may need
maintenance system incremental development to try prototypes before deciding what works.
University accounting Integration and configuration / Existing accounting processes may already be
system replacing existing reuse-oriented model supported by commercial systems, so reuse or
system customisation is likely.
Interactive travel planning Incremental / agile User-facing system with changing needs.
system development Features can be delivered and improved in
increments.
Student answer checklist: name one process model per system; explain the system type; justify the
model choice; mention safety, changing requirements, reuse, or user interaction; avoid only listing
models.
Question 2 - Software Testing as an Incremental Staged
Activity
Marks: 7
Read: Sommerville pp. 57-60.
What the question wants: Students must explain why testing happens in stages and whether
programmers should test their own code.
Key concepts: unit/component testing; integration testing; system testing; acceptance/customer testing;
debugging; independent testing.
Suggested structure: Explain that testing starts with small units and moves toward the complete
system. Each stage finds different types of errors. Programmers understand their code, but may miss
mistakes because of bias or assumptions. Programmers should test their own work, but independent
testers are also needed.
