The discovery of rich diamond and gold resources in southern Africa between the
1860s and the 1890s did more than provide spectacular wealth to a handful of
entrepreneurs. It reshaped the economy, transformed urban and rural politics,
altered the social fabric, and helped redraw the map of imperial power in southern
Africa and beyond. The diamond fields at Kimberley (discovered in 1867) and the
great gold finds on the Witwatersrand (from 1886 onward) brought vast capital, new
forms of corporate organization, and unprecedented international attention to the
region. They also intensified competition among European powers and between
white settler communities, contributing to the militarized politics that culminated in
the South African War (1899–1902). In short, these discoveries did not merely add
glitter to the colonial project; they wired southern Africa into the global capitalist
economy, reorganized labor systems, and created enduring legacies of racialized
wealth and power that shaped South African history for the next century and beyond.
Yet a critical assessment must also acknowledge the darker dimensions:
dispossession of indigenous communities, brutal labor practices, environmental
change, and the consolidation of white minority rule. The significance of diamonds
and gold thus resides in a double legacy of economic transformation and political
consolidation that deepened inequalities and set in motion the structural patterns that
long outlived the initial boom.

Economic transformation and the integration of southern Africa into global capitalism

The Kimberley diamond discovery of 1867 is often treated as the spark that ignited
the region’s modern economy. Diamonds offered a different kind of commodity: a
high-value, relatively portable mineral that could be mined, traded, and refined under
centralized, capitalization-intensive regimes. The early mining fortunes concentrated
rapidly, and by the late 1870s and 1880s, a corporate form—most famously De
Beers—began to dominate the industry. The De Beers group, established by Cecil
Rhodes and, in a rival vein, Barney Barnato and their associates, exemplified the
new logic of mining capitalism: large-scale capital investment, centralized decision-
making, diversified marketing strategies, and aggressive control over supply. The
Kimberley and surrounding mines became the cradle of a new South African
capitalism, where finance, mining technology, railways, and banking moved in
tandem to extract value from the earth.

With diamonds providing an initial cash flow and prestige, the discovery of gold on
the Witwatersrand in 1886 accelerated the region’s transformation in ways that
