ANSWER
A
THE CASE FOR MULTILINGUALISM IN LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE COUNTRIES
South Africa’s Constitution recognises eleven official languages, yet English still rules
as the main language used in universities (Ndlangamandla & Chaka, 2023, p. 9). There
is a gap between what the policy says and what happens in reality. Some people think
that using only one language for teaching makes things simpler and more efficient.
However, I strongly believe that multilingualism should be used for teaching, learning
and assessment in countries where many languages are spoken. There are three
important reasons for this. Multilingual teaching helps learners understand their work
better. It also makes education fair for everyone and helps make sure that tests and
assessments match what learners have been taught. (ENG1503 Tutorial Letter 501,
2023).
