Artificial Intelligence Productivity and Sustainability
1.0 Background
Over the years, there has been a rise in issues related to climate change and food security.
Consequently, a considerable number of industries in the world have been incorporation artificial
intelligence in their systems and practices. For instance, in agriculture, artificial intelligence has
been widely used. Generally, artificial intelligence improves agricultural productivity and
sustainability. Artificial intelligence is therefore essential for any economy that intends to
increase its sustainability and productivity. This paper expounds on artificial intelligence
productivity and sustainability.
2.0 Artificial Intelligence
There are various definitions of artificial intelligence. According to Shabir, (2018)
artificial intelligence is the act of replicating or simulating human intelligence in machines.
Overall, artificial intelligence enables machines to think humanly and rationally. Thinking
humanly and rationally processes reasoning while acting rationally and humanly deals with
behavior. This helps more in focusing on this field more as a blueprint for infusing machines and
programs with machine learning. Its more of a computer system that is powered by deep machine
programming to be able to undertake actions that require human intelligence to perform.
Machine learning is simply feeding data into the computer system and using statistical
techniques in making it progressively better at a task which can either be supervised learning and
unsupervised.
Generally, artificial intelligence falls under two categories, that is, narrow artificial
intelligence and artificial general intelligence (Shabir, 2018). Narrow artificial intelligence is at
times referred to as the weak intelligence as it operates within a limited context and an
intelligence based on human simulation. Narrow intelligence has in the last decade experienced
numerous breakthroughs that have had a significant societal benefit and equally contributed to
economic aspects in the country (Shabir, 2013). Examples of narrow intelligence includes google
search, image recognition, self-driving cars, Siri, Alexa and other personal assistants, IBM’s
Watson among many others that are still in use in our day to day life.
Artificial intelligence has substantially contributed towards industry transformation and
has the potential to shift the roles of the different players in any industry. Other players, such as
venture capital firms, corporate venture funds, startups bring dynamism in the market and
stakeholder network. While large agricultural organizations focus on setting up artificial
intelligence frameworks, startups deliver solutions all across the value chain, ranging from
infrastructure, sensors, software algorithms that provide insights on the various streams of data
across the farms. An increasing number of small information technology startups are launching
products and services, giving their counterparts strong business competition. Artificial
intelligence apart from all these, it encompasses important themes such as productivity,
sustainability, innovation, industry transformation, target crops among others.
2.1 Benefits of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence enhances End-to-end efficiency. It eases operations while promoting
analytics and resource utilization across the company. Eventually, this leads to significant cost
reductions. It automates long processes and reduces downtime by predicting maintenance need.
It facilitates Improved accuracy and decision-making. Artificial intelligence integrates human
intelligence with many analytics and pattern prediction capabilities to improve quality,
effectiveness and creativity of employees.
