The Turn of The Screw

Existence of ghosts

The ghosts in The Turn of The Screw are real and evil. The possibilities that Miss

Giddens saw ghosts are real. This is well evident by the clear cut by the great details Gidden has

in the male apparition description. Within the context of the story setting, apart from Hidden, no

other person corroborates her sighting. Ghostly apparitions in the story with darkened lighting

and slightly blurred without a doubt, enhance this particular scene's scariness. The ghosts are

probably there or not regarding how the case is. There is circumstantial evidence observed by

how the housekeeper explains the master's valet, Peter Quint's premature death. Exorcism

ceremony performance creates suspense by describing how the governess fails to bring the

preacher and directly reacts to the matter. Though the substantial evinces that show the ghosts'

existence, the claim cannot entirety be proven. Therefore, this essay's main purpose would be to

explore the problems of ghosts' presence within the story and how this has impacted the

governess's life.

The existence of ghosts informs more on the intensity and suspense creation within the

novella. The structural patterns on how the ghost scenes are presented shows that governess

protection is guaranteed regardless of how the story begins. It reiterates more on the theme of

belief. Since the ghosts' existence was mainly articulated from a cognitive point of view, their

impacts are felt among the ones who believe that they actually exist. This claim means that the

governess saw a real ghost or was only hallucinating. She witnesses another ghost that makes her

create assumptions based on the governess former children. Though governess wants to protect

the children from the ghosts that she believes to be evil. Belief systems are clearly articulated

within the entire scenes that records the presence of ghosts.
