Professional Nursing

Catalog Description:
Provides the articulating student the opportunity to examine the role of the professional nurse;
application of a systematic problem-solving process and critical thinking skills which includes a
focus on the adult population in selected settings; and competency in knowledge, judgment, skill,
and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to either a
blocked or an integrated approach. Transition course.

Introduction and Purpose:
This course provides the Vocational nurse articulating student the opportunity to
demonstrate
competency of Professional Nurse skills and assessment. The course also provides the
Vocational nurse an opportunity to examine the role of the Associate Degree Nurse (ADN).
Instructional Materials:
Information covered during the course may be accomplished by lecture, handouts, case studies,
guest lectures, seminars or audio/electronic/simulation/power point presentation. It is the
student’s responsibility to participate in all activities. It is also the student’s responsibility to ask
questions whenever information is not understood.

Stethoscope, uniform/scrub suit, penlight, wristwatch with second hand (no smart watches) also
required.

Association. (7th ed.). Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association
Computer/Software:
The ability to access the internet is required for this course. All communication with instructor
and peers must be submitted via the Hill College email system. With the exception of
handwritten work, any required coursework/assignments will be completed/submitted
via
Schoology, and/or ATI. These software applications are required. (Any handwritten work will be
done on forms provided.)
Power point presentations, announcements, and other course information will be posted on
Schoology. It is the student's responsibility to check Schoology frequently for information
posted. Students are advised to check Schoology for posts or email on a daily basis. Access to
Schoology can be accomplished via any computer or smart device with internet access. Failure to
check Schoology will not be an acceptable reason for not knowing posted information.

Course Requirements:
A. Students are expected to be active participants in the teaching/learning process; this is
accomplished by reading, viewing Evolve audio-visual materials, publisher textbook
resources, participating in lab/clinical experiences, seeking learning opportunities in the
clinical setting, and being prepared with appropriate support information and
documentation.
B. The Campus Laboratory will be the center of, and an important part of, the
learning process. Students are encouraged to be self-directed, actively
involved and are expected to practice with the medical equipment and manikins to
enhance skills that will be used in the clinical setting.
C. Field Trips and Alternative Learning Experiences: Such activities are a part of the
student’s experience and all students are expected to participate and to be responsible for
their own transportation, expenses and travel arrangements.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL NURSING STUDENTS-COVID-19 UPDATE
Based on guidance provided by Governor Abbott’s office, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), and local county agencies, Hill College will return to pre-COVID operations
(Phase 5), beginning May 19, 2021. This means that students, employees, and guests will no
longer be required to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, or adhere to restricted
occupancy limits If increases in infection or hospitalization rates cause state or local officials to
change guidance and recommendations, Hill College will reevaluate our health and safety
protocol
If Hill College campus operations are required to change because of health concerns related to
the COVID-19 pandemic, it is possible that this course will move to a fully online delivery
format. Should that be necessary, students will need to have access to a computer with webcam
and microphone and reliable internet service for remote delivery of the class.
