COURSE TITLE Foundations of Nursing
PREREQUISITES Successful completion of NSG 214/214A, 304,403, 422

COURSE METHODOLOGY Face to Face
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this course is to introduce basic nursing concepts of health/illness continuum, patient-centered
care, environment of care, legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements, and professional nursing roles. This course
implements the utilization of the nursing process based on scientific evidence to provide holistic care for adult
and geriatric populations with stable health and chronic medical conditions. Concurrent enrollment in NSG 240A
is required unless approved by the Department Chair.
COURSE GOAL
The primary goal of this course is for novice level nursing students to identify and apply basic nursing concepts
utilized in professional nursing. Students will begin to understand rationales for nursing actions in management of
basic health conditions and wellness
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Develop techniques of caring, therapeutic nursing relationships, the role of integrative therapies with
individuals, families, and groups.

for Nurses (QSEN), Planetree elements and California Nurse Practice Act components (NPA) are integrated with the
Course Learning Outcomes.
The Nursing Practice Act (NPA) is the body of California law that mandates the Board to set out the scope of
practice and responsibilities for RNs. The NPA is located in the California Business and Professions Code
starting with Section 2700.
