Role of the APN in Federal Strategic Planning for HIT
Federal strategic planning is a vital movement to campaign initiatives for
health information technology (HIT) advancement. This movement should be a
focal point for the advanced practice nurse (APN) to advocate for changes in HIT
that promote the patient’s wellbeing, while enhancing the delivery and
experience of care. These focuses are two out of the four puzzle pieces in the
current Federal Health IT Strategic Plan for 2020-2025.
The plan’s initiation for promotion of health and wellness focuses on three
subcategories; improving access to health information, advancing healthy and safe
practices, and integrating health and human services information (McBride, 2022).
The APN can assist by forming user surveys to generate feedback on what is
currently working versus what is not to enhance easier operational applications
(e.g., mobile application). This survey can be provided to both healthcare staff and
patients to obtain a dual focal information generation. With the help of IT
department, the survey information can be then translated and integrated (e.g.,
health and human services) in current EHR systems for easier, smoother and faster
access to patient health information while enhancing system feasibility and
decreasing maneuver complexity (Idoko et al., 2024). The APN can ensure HIPAA
compliant protocols are strictly adhered to in order to protect the system’s
