make the best available informed decision for patient care (King et al., 2021). For

the purpose of this essay, we will utilize the CDC’s website to extract the data set -

Leading Causes of Death for 2023 - specifically from the National Vital Statistic

System (NVSS). The objective of this paper is to pinpoint trends, patterns, and any

anomalies from the provided information that as future APNs, will become

beneficial to get accustomed to for in-depth understanding on data set

signification, so that translation and application from this given information can

be applied to optimize patient care.

The dataset utilized is the Leading Causes of Death for 2023, which

categorizes the 10 leading causes of mortality in 2023 by age, race, gender, and

Hispanic origin including neonatal and infant mortality (Tejada-Vera et al., 2023).

The data set’s data collection was obtained from filed death certificates

throughout the 50 states classified by the International Classification of Diseases,

10th Revision following the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) death

ranking metric. The data ranks adult death mortalities by cause in descending

order starting with highest prevalence: heart disease, malignant neoplasms,

unintentional accidental injuries, cerebrovascular disease, chronic lower

respiratory disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, nephritis and/or nephrotic

syndrome and/or nephrosis, chronic liver disease and/or cirrhosis, and COVID-19.

For infants and neonatal deaths, the ranked mortality order is congenital
