Biodiversity
➔ variety of life on Earth at any given site or ecosystem
➔ The term “biodiversity” was coined by Raymond F. Dasmann in
1985 and was introduced to the science communities by
Thomas E. Lovejoy
Types of Biodiversity
Species Diversity
➔ pertains to the total number of species that exist within a region, as well
as the number of individuals composing each species and how they interact
with each other and the physical environment
➔ species - a group of organisms possessing a unique set of characteristics
Genetic Diversity
➔ pertains to the variations in genes (genetic makeup or genotype) between
distinct species
➔ exists as a result of the variation in the sequence of the four base-pairs that
compose the DNA nucleotide
Ecosystem Diversity
➔ pertains to the variation of ecosystems: forests (temperate and tropical),
savannas, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, ponds
➔ Ecosystem - a unique and a specific environment characterized by certain
physical conditions, mostly temperature and amount of rainfall and
topographies are inhabited by various species of plants, animals, &
microorganisms
BIodiversity Loss
➔ biodiversity is being lost if there is a continuous decrease or
extinction of species, loss of specific habitat, and loss in the
genetic variations within species
