Geographical context:

Istanbul, a metropolis of Europe, is the largest city in Turkey with a population of 83.2 million
people (nationsonline.org). This transcontinental city situated across Europe and Asia, separated by the
bosphorus strait and connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, is difficult to describe its urban
development because of how it is constantly ever-changing (Seger). Istanbul has a rich history and the
city's geostrategic location has impacted its importance in major political and historical events throughout
time (Centre), as well as, serving as a highly beneficial shipping route for countries worldwide.

Additionally, Istanbul is split up into numerous districts, and in order to assess how Istanbul
conforms to a land use model - which simplifies complex real world situations of the way land is used in
urban areas and these theories explain the layout of these urban areas (Rodrigue) - we carried out the
investigation in multiple districts: Kadikoy, Sariyer, Beyoglu, Sisli, Besiktas e.t.c. These districts
contained Istanbul's chain of central business districts (CBD), including the cities historic CBD in
Sultanahmet and its new and upcoming CBD's which demonstrated how and where Istanbul is urbanizing.
