How did the Nazis convince a modern industrialized nation to embrace mass murder?

, Section 1: Identification and Evaluation of Sources

This investigation seeks to answer the question: How did the Nazis convince a modern

industrialized nation to embrace mass murder? The novel, "A World without Jews: The Nazi Imagination

from Persecution to Genocide", was written by Alon Confino and it explains how the annihilation of the

Jews was anticipated. Specifically, he analyzes why the Germans wanted to persuecute all Jews and the

success of their anti-Jewish acts in German society. The second source, "Antisemitism: The Longest

Hatred" by Robert Wistrich examines anti-Semitism globally, in the Middle East and its recent rise in

Europe. These sources were essential for this investigation as they provided an abundance of information

of how the Nazi's attempted to annihilate all European Jews.

The origin of the first source is Alon Confino, who is a historian and expert on German and

European history and the Holocaust. He was educated at UC Berkeley and was nominated for the Pulitzer

Prize and the National Book Award for his book, "A World without Jews: The Nazi Imagination from

Persecution to Genocide" was written in 2014. It displays how Nazis came to imagine a world without

Jews, to create its own origin and the desired "new, improved, pure Germany without the Jews and the

modern vices caused by them" (31). This source has value as it helped provide an insight to anti-Jewish

acts and how they became widespread in Germany, which is needed to understand how Nazis convinced

the German nation to embrace the persecution of Jews. Confino also explains what "the Jew" meant to the

nation and to Nazis, which helps to understand the negative assumptions and accusations Nazis had of

Jewish people. However, this secondary source is limited to the author's exaggeration of important events

and not thoroughly explaining information such as, how anti-Semitsm was not solely found in Germany

and was spread worldwide.

The origin of the second source is Robert S. Wistrich who published his book "Antisemitism: The

Longest Hatred" in 1991, and won the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Literary Prize. Wistrich was one of the
