Gases are like substances that can move around freely . It is the state of matter
that has no fixed shape and no fixed volume it has lower density than the other
state of matter such as solids and liquid. Gases can be produced during chemical
reactions.
The method used to collect a particular gas depends on
Solubility. It’s ability to dissolve in water
Density. How heavy it is compared to air
There are three common methods to collect a sample of gas
Displacement of water
Upward delivery
Downwards delivery
Displacement of water .This method is suitable for collecting gases which are
insoluble or only slightly soluble in water this gases are lighter intensity than
water . All of the gases collected by this method have hydrogen, oxygen and
carbon dioxide
Upward delivery. This method is used to collect gases that are soluble in water it
has lighter density compared to air example include CI2, HCL and SO2
Downwards delivery . This method is used to collect gases that are soluble in
water it has heavier density as compared to air. Example include NH4.
How to identify gases.
There are test for gases like hydrogen ,oxygen , carbon dioxide ammonia chloride
can be used can be identified using different test.
Hydrogen. A lighted wooden splits makes a popping sound in the test tube of
hydrogen
Oxygen a glowing wooden split relight in a test tube of oxygen
Carbon dioxide turns lime water milky
Ammonia has a shocking smell makes dumped red lips most pepper blue
