DR. MARGARET W. MATLIN’S COURSE hj hj hj hj

My syllabus changes somewhat from one semester to the next, but the syllabus
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

below is the version I used in Fall Semester, 2010. (However, the textbook
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

for that course was the 6th edition.) I think it’s important for a syllabus to
h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

include a brief description of the course, as well as the goals. From the
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

first page of the syllabus, students should be able to understand the general
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j

scope of the course.
h j h j h j h j

You can find several additional syllabi for courses on
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j the Psychology of h j h j

Scroll down the list of courses on the right-hand side,
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j and you will find the

topic “Women and Gender.”
h j h j hj h j

Additional note: Psychology of Women Quarterly now includes a “Teaching
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

Section” in each issue. It features between one and three short articles in
h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

each issue, which focus on topics related to women and gender, such as
h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

critical thinking, social class, social justice advocacy. I am the current editor
h j h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j

of this Teaching Section; please email me at , if you have
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j

an idea about a potential article related to this teaching!
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

On the first day of class, students also receive a description of the Psychology
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

of Women Research Project, an important component of my course. Later in
h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

this document you can find a description of this project, as well as some

details about the project.

SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION h j

The purpose of this course is to examine the lives of girls and women. We
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

will include topics such as gender stereotypes, the development of gender
h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

roles, gender comparisons, women and work, love relationships, sexuality,
h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j

women’s physical and mental health, violence against women, and women in
h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j

later adulthood. Students who take this course should acquire a better
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j

understanding about girls, women, and gender in North America.
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

As the course instructor, I’m hopeful that each of you will work toward the
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

following goals:
h j h j

1. To understand the relevant information about the lives of girls and
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

women—as well as gender—with a particular emphasis on the
h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

complexity of the issues.
h j h j h j h j

2. To develop critical-thinking skills, so that you can evaluate both the
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

research in professional journals and information described in the
h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j

popular media.
h j h j

3. To know h j h j how to design your own psychology research project, to
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

conduct h j h j the research, and to write an appropriately professional summary
hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

of your h j h j h j own research, emphasizing the potential methodological flaws and
h j hj h j h j h j h j h j

strengthsh j h j in your study. h j h j

4. To explore your own ideas and attitudes about gender, appreciating that we
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

do not need to be constrained by our culture’s traditional gender roles.
h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

5. To appreciate the inequalities that many individuals face, based on social
h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

categories other than gender. These categories include age, disability,
h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j h j

sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, social class, and country of
h j h j hj h j h j h j h j h j h j

residence. We will also consider some information about inequalities in
h j h j h j h j h j hj h j h j h j h j

other cultures, outside North America.
