POPULATION ECOLOGY
Based off of Mind Action Series Book: Tayla Owen-Jones

, Some Terms to know

 Ecology: Study of the interactions of organisms with their physical and biological
environments and how these interactions determine the distribution and make up of
population within an ecosystem

 Population Ecology: Fluctuations in population size and the factors that regulate
populations

 Population: Group of organisms of the same species that also occupy the same are
can breed freely with each other, such as Elephant in the Kruger Park

 Species: A group of organisms that share characteristics and are able to breed amon
themselves but with no other groups
 For example: Different Breeds of dog’s can breed together but they cann
breed with cats

, Population Size and Factors that
can affect this

Population Size: Refers to the number of individuals in a population

This can increase due to Natality ( birth into the population) with both animals and
production of seeds

It can decrease due to Mortality (the death rate increasing) and can also be affected
Emigration ( Individuals leave a population and do not return) and Immigration
( individuals move into a population)

Populations will grow when birth and immigration exceed death and emigration and vis
They are stable when they equal each other

In a closed population ( no Immigration and Emigration) it will only be affected by birt
death rates
