LIFE
Stevenson was born in 1850 in Edinburgh. For his poor health he spent most of his
childhood in bed, tutored in bed by his strict family.
He went to Edinburgh but then he decided to devote himself to writing. In his young age,
he travelled a lot, he lived in the south of England, Germany, France, and Italy.
He gradually rejected the kind of life that was expected from him and become one of the
rst examples of bohemian in Britain: he grew his hair long and his manners became a
eccentric.
In 1880 he married an American women and since then his health was deteriorating. They
settles in Samoa where he died in 1894.
He become popular as a novelist in 1880s were published “Treasure Island”, “The strange
case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, “kidnapped”, “the master of Ballantrae”.
THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MYSTER HYDE
PLOT
The story is centred on Mr Utterson, a respectable London lawyer who is a close friend
of the brilliant scientist Henry Jekyll. Jekyll has created a potion capable of releasing his
evil side, which takes the form of a completely di erent man: Mr Hyde.
These two beings are in perpetual struggle with each other. Over time, Hyde achieves
domination over the Jekyll aspect, and in the end Jekyll's suicide becomes the nal and
only possible choice.
SETTINGS
The novel is set in Victorian London in the 1870s. The city itself re ects the central
theme of the story because it has a double nature: on one side there is the respectable
West End, and on the other the appalling slums of the East End. This contrast is
mirrored perfectly in Jekyll's house, which has two doors.
The front, used by the doctor, is attractive and part of a square of handsome houses,
while the rear side, used by Mr Hyde, is part of a sinister block of buildings. Most of the
scenes take place at night, which adds a strong sense of mystery and danger to the
narrative.
