The BRICS consortium comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa
represents one of the most significant configurations of emerging economies in the
contemporary global order. Collectively accounting for over 40% of the world's population
and approximately one-quarter of global GDP, the BRICS nations have increasingly
positioned themselves as alternative centres of geopolitical, economic, and intellectual
influence, challenging the dominance of Western-led international institutions. Within this
constellation, education has been recognised as a cornerstone of national development,
social cohesion, and economic competitiveness, making the comparative study of BRICS
education systems a matter of considerable scholarly and policy significance (Seroto,
Davids, & Wolhuter, 2020).

This essay undertakes a comparative analysis of the primary education systems of Brazil
and China two of the largest and most demographically complex nations within BRICS.
The selection of these two nations is analytically motivated by the richness of their contrasts
and the scope of their similarities. Both Brazil and China have undergone dramatic
educational transformations over the past four decades, achieving near-universal primary
school enrolment from very different starting points and through markedly different
governmental approaches. Both nations grapple with profound internal inequalities
regional, socio-economic, and ethnic that complicate the delivery of equitable educational
provision. Yet they differ fundamentally in their political systems, cultural traditions,
