Unit 3.6. 1.3 Select one family or cultural ritual that you have witnessed

identity while you were growing up. Unit 3.3. 1.5 Discuss how people in
your community use clan names, surnames, or praise names to identify
themselves, and why this is important.

1.1 Naming conventions (Unit 3.4)

In my community, names are carefully selected based on cultural traditions, family history, and
circumstances surrounding a child’s birth. For example, a child may be named after a
grandparent to honour ancestors and maintain family lineage. In some cases, names reflect the
situation at the time of birth, such as joy, hardship, or hope.

Names often carry deep meanings and values. For instance, a name like Wanjiku (in Kikuyu
culture) may indicate lineage, while names such as Baraka (meaning “blessing”) reflect gratitude
and positivity. These names are not just labels but convey identity, expectations, and cultural
heritage. They also reinforce values such as respect for elders, continuity, and spiritual
connection.

1.2 Language and personal identity (Unit 3.6)

Language plays a crucial role in shaping my personal identity because it reflects my cultural
background, values, and way of thinking. Speaking my mother tongue connects me to my
heritage and helps me express myself more authentically.
