1.There are many ideas related to reading. Reading helps us to understand our
immediate surroundings (street signs and shop names); to understand the world
around us (newspapers and textbooks); to be involved with other people (social media
and visual literacy) and to gain academic knowledge by critically reading, analysing
and interpreting academic texts. (TUT501, 2020: 8).
1.1 Ways reading helps you understand the world around you (4 marks)
Reading plays an important role in helping individuals understand their immediate and
wider environment. At a basic level, reading enables people to interpret everyday
information such as street signs, notices, and shop names, which helps them navigate
their surroundings safely and effectively. On a broader level, reading newspapers,
textbooks, and online articles allows individuals to understand current events, social
issues, and global developments, thereby connecting them to the world beyond their
immediate environment. In addition, reading social media posts and visual texts
enhances interaction with others and improves understanding of different perspectives
and cultures. According to TUT501 (2020:8), reading is not only about decoding words
but also about interpreting meaning in different contexts. Therefore, reading helps
individuals become informed, socially aware, and engaged citizens who can understand
both their physical environment and the wider social world.
