, PYC3711 ASSIGNMENT 1 2026
DUE 28 AUGUST 2026

Dear Students,
For assessment 1 you will be required to respond to questions which draw from the
academic article titled “Masculine = Competent? Physical Appearance and Sex as
Sources of Gender-Stereotypic Attributions”, Swiss Journal of Psychology,

A. Explain why prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination may be relevant to the
findings in Sczesny et al’s. (2006) article. In your explanation you need to: A.
Define prejudice and provide an example that is related to the central theme of
the article by Sczesny et al. (2006)

Prejudice is a negative emotional response or attitude directed toward members of a
social group solely because of their group membership (Baumeister & Bushman, 2022;
Stangor, 2015). An example related to the central theme of Sczesny et al. (2006) is the
negative affective reaction e.g. discomfort or lowered evaluation) toward women or
feminine-appearing individuals when judging their suitability for leadership roles,
stemming from the “think-manager–think-male” association.

B. Define stereotypes using your own words and provide an example related to
the central theme of the article Sczesny et al. (2006)
