 Section A: Reflection: Poetry (Unit 2)

Whispers of the Earth

Beneath the vast, unyielding sky,
The oceans murmur, low and shy.
Whales glide through depths so wide,
Where ancient secrets still reside.

The trees that stand with silent grace,
Hold stories of a vanished race.
Their leaves, now stained with whispers old,
Tell tales of battles, fierce and bold.

Yet as we stand, our eyes now blind,
We forget the earth, the ties that bind.
The rivers weep, the oceans cry,
For memories we’ve let slip by.

In this world of fleeting years,
Let not our silence drown the fears.
For nature speaks in voices clear,
And in her whispers, we must hear.

A) Identify the poem and poet you have chosen. Briefly explain why you chose this poem and
what your first reaction to it was. Did anything about the poem surprise or confuse you?

I chose this poem, Whispers of the Earth, because it resonates with my growing awareness of
environmental issues. Upon reading it, I felt a deep sadness about the way we’ve disconnected from
the natural world. The idea of ancient stories being carried by nature itself was both beautiful and
haunting, and I was struck by how the poem evokes a sense of urgency to listen to what the Earth is
telling us before it's too late.
