Biographical information
Mtshali was born in 1920 in Vryheid. Both his parents were teachers. He was desperate for
a tertiary education, but Apartheid prevented him from going. He studies through
correspondents. He worked in Soweto and most of his writing is about the life and personal
experiences within Soweto. He was known as the “voice for the vulnerable”


Meaning/Message
Conscientizes reader about: inequality, class division, mistreatment of the working class.
Contrasts the experiences of rich vs poor and bread.



Structure
No particular rhyme schemes. However, each stanza offers a different perspective.
