Central State University | BUS 5130 Marketing Management: Mini-Case 11 – Celeb-Relief Mini-Case 11, “Celeb-Relief,” presents a compelling exploration of the strategic risks and rewards inherent in leveraging celebrity influence for cause-related marketing. As a student in BUS 5130 at Central State University, I am analyzing how brands and non-profit organizations navigate the delicate balance between amplifying reach through high-profile ambassadors and mitigating the vulnerabilities associated with celebrity scandals, public perception shifts, and authenticity gaps. This case challenges us to evaluate the criteria for selecting celebrity partners, assess the potential reputational fallout when a spokesperson’s personal actions conflict with organizational values, and develop contingency strategies that protect brand integrity while preserving the momentum of mission-driven campaigns. Through this lens, we are examining the intersection of influencer marketing, ethical branding, and crisis management in an era where consumer scrutiny is relentless and loyalty is conditional.

Mini-Case 11: Celeb-Relief
Which option(s) make sense? Here’s my opinion, Jack’s goal is to elevate a no-kill shelter’s
visibility on a shoestring budget. In reality, Jack has to select a spokesperson that must
balance three factors:
 Cost/Accessibility
 Relevance and credibility to the cause
 Likelihood of participation
Here is an evaluation of each option.
1. Jack wants to reach out to a star of Clooney et al.’s status. It would be cool. A major
celebrity (Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Bono, etc.)

Pros
 Major amplification: A-list celebrities bring massive media exposure.
 Instant credibility and public interest.
 Alignment with other high–social-impact causes could elevate the shelter’s profile.

Cons

 Unrealistic for a local, low-budget nonprofit.
 Major celebrities charge significant fees or require large-scale partnerships.
 Lack of local relevance. The public may not feel connected to a global figure
promoting a small-town shelter.
 Hard to reach. Gatekeepers, agents, and strict scheduling reduce feasibility.

Verdict

 Not practical and unlikely for a strapped nonprofit. This one falls into the “cool idea,
but unworkable” category.
