Environment: Part-time job in a busy cafe

I want to describe a situation from my part-time job at a busy cafe where I found I
had to change the way I spoke depending on who I was talking to and what I was
trying to achieve. The cafe is a fast-paced, customer-facing space with a mix of
regulars, tourists, and coworkers from different backgrounds. This setting made
language use especially visible: I spoke one way with customers and a different way
with my coworkers.

How my language changed in this environment

- With customers: I shifted to a more formal, courteous register. I used complete
sentences, clear pronunciation, and polite phrases such as “Good morning.
Welcome to [Cafe]. How can I help you today?” I avoided slang and minimized filler
words. I adjusted my tone to be warm but professional—calm voice, steady pace,
and explicit directions when needed (for example, “Would you like me to package
that to go?” or “Please let me know if you’d like a receipt”). Even during busy
moments, I tried to maintain a consistent, friendly style and ensured I spoke slowly
enough to be understood.

- With coworkers: I used a more concise, task-focused style. Our communication
leaned on industry terms and quick shorthand to keep operations efficient (for
example, “two lattes, no sugar, extra hot; order up at the expo; I’ve got the register”
or “ticket 42 needs milk; I’ll take the front”). I allowed more casual language among
the staff—small jokes, brief chit-chat during lulls—yet I remained mindful of clarity
and, when necessary, asked for confirmation to avoid mistakes.

- Across both groups: I learned to switch not only vocabulary but also pace, volume,
and emphasis. With customers, I slowed down and used clearer enunciation; with
coworkers, I increased speed and used direct imperatives when coordinating tasks.
