SECTION A: SUMMARY OF THE COMMUNITY
The community of psychology students at Unisa consists of learners who are
connected through their registration in psychology modules, shared academic
interests and the common aim of completing their qualifications successfully. A
community does not always depend on people living in the same place, because it
may also develop among individuals who share concerns, identities and goals
across different geographical areas (PYC2614 Study Guide, 2026). Unisa

community does not always depend on people living in the same place, because it
may also develop among individuals who share concerns, identities and goals

psychology students are spread throughout South Africa and other countries, yet
they remain connected through myModules, online discussion forums, tutorial
classes, announcements, study materials and assessment activities. These learning
spaces allow students from different cultural, language, age and economic
backgrounds to exchange ideas while developing knowledge about human
behaviour and community wellbeing (PYC2614 Study Guide, 2026). Their shared
experiences include managing independent study, meeting assessment deadlines,
accessing learning materials and seeking academic support when difficulties arise.
The students may also experience similar barriers, including limited internet access,
high data costs, delayed responses, employment pressures, family responsibilities
and feelings of isolation created by distance learning. Community empowerment
involves having the ability, knowledge and resources needed to influence matters
that affect the lives and wellbeing of community members (Balcazar et al., 2019).
Psychology students may therefore be viewed as a community because their
academic progress is influenced by common learning structures, available resources
and opportunities to communicate with lecturers, tutors and fellow students. Although
each student remains responsible for personal learning, their wellbeing and
academic development can be strengthened when they share information, offer
emotional support and participate in discussions about common challenges. A strong
student community should enable members to express their concerns, take part in
decisions and develop the confidence required to seek assistance and advocate for
fair academic support (Balcazar et al., 2019). The Unisa psychology student
community is therefore a diverse distance-learning group whose members are linked
