Semester 1 ASSIGNMENT 1
Introduction
Emthonjeni Informal Settlement is a rapidly growing low-income community in the
Eastern Cape that faces a set of intertwined water-service challenges: steep terrain
and irregular settlement patterns complicate conventional reticulation, illegal water
connections erode system reliability, and demand fluctuates with seasonal in- and
out-migration. A five-pronged approach that leverages GIS for planning, design, and
monitoring can help the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality (KSDLM)
implement sustainable, equitable, and climate-resilient water provision. The five
strategies below are designed to address technical, social, and governance
dimensions, with explicit GIS-enabled mechanisms to guide decision-making and
implementation.
Strategy 1. GIS-guided phased expansion of the distribution network and service
zoning
What the strategy aims to achieve
- Deliver more reliable water supply to households across the irregular settlement,
prioritizing areas with the worst access and greatest population concentration while
minimizing capital-intensive trenching in steep and erosion-prone terrain.
- Create scalable, gravity-leaning zones that optimize head, pressure, and storage.
How GIS supports planning and implementation
- Build a digital base with a high-resolution GIS of Emthonjeni: elevation, slope,
drainage, flood-prone areas, existing and proposed pipe corridors, locations of
current standpipes, and informal growth footprints.
- Use a hydraulic/water-systems model (for example, EPANET or similar) integrated
with the GIS to simulate flows, pressures, and headloss under multiple scenarios
(current demand, projected 5-year/10-year demand, flood events).
- Generate corridor analyses to identify the most cost-effective trunk mains and
feeder routes that minimize excavation on steep slopes and avoid flood-prone
segments.
