IOP3707 ASSIGNMENT 2 SEMESTER 1 2026 Question 1: Leadership Behaviour and Effectiveness in the “Mission or Soldiers” Case Study 1.1 Differences in Leadership Behaviours between the Colonel and the Major Leadership behaviour can generally be classified into two broad categories: people oriented behaviour (consideration) and task-oriented behaviour (initiating structure). These behavioural categories were identified in early leaderaship research conducted at Ohio State University and remain influential in modern leadership theory (Northouse, 2022). The case study clearly illustrates how the colonel and the major demonstrate contrasting leadership behaviours that align with these two dimensions. The colonel demonstrates a high level of consideration, meaning that he prioritises interpersonal relationships, employee welfare, and trust within the team. Leaders who display high consideration typically show concern for the needs, well-being, and development of their followers. In the case study, the colonel is described as being deeply concerned about the welfare of his soldiers and paying attention to them as individuals. His behaviour reflects a leadership philosophy that values respect, empathy, and equality. For example, he deliberately declined privileges that were available only to officers, signalling to the soldiers that he regarded them as equals rather than merely subordinates. Such behaviour fosters strong psychological bonds between leaders and followers, resulting in high levels of loyalty and commitment (Daft, 2023)
