QUESTION 1

1.1 Africanisation

Definition

Africanisation refers to the process of centring African perspectives,
values, histories, and cultural experiences within education systems. It
aims to ensure that education reflects African identities, worldviews,
languages, and knowledge rather than relying mainly on Western
perspectives. Africanisation promotes pride in African heritage and
recognises Africa as a legitimate source of knowledge.

Application to the Foundation Phase

In the Foundation Phase, Africanisation can be applied by incorporating
African stories, folktales, songs, games, and cultural practices into
teaching and learning. Teachers can use examples that reflect the
learners’ communities, traditions, and daily experiences.

For example, when teaching language or literacy, teachers can include
African folktales and traditional stories that teach moral lessons and
cultural values. In Mathematics, teachers may use local contexts such as
counting traditional objects or solving problems related to everyday
community activities.

Africanisation also promotes the use of African languages as the
medium of instruction in the early grades. This helps learners understand
concepts more easily because they are taught in a language familiar to
them. By doing this, learners develop a strong cultural identity and feel
that their culture and background are valued within the school
environment.
