Preoperative Care

Perioperative Nursing phases
 Preoperative phase - care provided from the time of decision to proceed with surgical
intervention until the patient is transferred to the operating room
 Intraoperative phase - care provided from the time patient enters the operating room
until they are transferred to PACU
 Postoperative phase - care provided upon admission to the PACU until the patient is no
longer under any restrictions and resumes all normal activities

Preoperative Nursing - Assessment
 A thorough assessment is essential prior to a patient going to surgery
o This information can be collected in a preadmission (PAT) setting or in a pre-op
holding area depending on the type of surgery and the admission status of the
patient.
o *Obtaining this information on the patient prior to surgery greatly improves
communication and planning of patient care*

o If pt. is taking a betablocker, must be taken before surgery (do not stop this
medication)… some medications are stopped before surgery

 Prior surgery?
o Hx of malignant hyperthermia?
 Blood transfusions?
 Allergies?
 Educational needs?
