1. Introduction
Aggressive and violent contact crimes continue to present a serious
challenge in South Africa. These crimes involve direct interaction
between the offender and the victim and often include the use of
violence, intimidation, or threats. Among the various forms of violent
crime, robbery is one of the most common and most feared by members
of the public. Robbery not only results in the unlawful loss of property
but also causes physical harm, emotional trauma, and a general sense of
insecurity in communities.
South Africa has experienced high levels of robbery for many years.
Incidents of street robbery, house robbery, car hijacking, and business
robbery occur frequently in both urban and rural areas. These crimes
often involve weapons such as firearms, knives, or other dangerous
objects, which increase the potential for serious injury or death. Because
robbery involves direct confrontation between offenders and victims, it
is considered a particularly dangerous form of criminal activity.
