1. My understanding of a professional teacher:
Being a teacher is a skill as well as a talent.
Certain qualities are of utmost importance when you’re planning your life around becoming a
teacher. You have to keep in mind that the children you teach today are the adults of tomorrow that
will grow to power. Therefore the work you put in today can be the fruits of tomorrow. These before
mentioned qualities are not traits that just anybody is born with. It takes someone special to teach
tomorrow’s leaders. Being a professional teacher is more than just standing in class and telling kids
which page to turn to in their books. It’s about aspiring to inspire, and teaching children more than
just the words on the page, but life skills and how to overcome certain obstacles in life. It takes a
certain type of skill to be able to communicate knowledge to children in a way that they take it to
heart, and that is what being a professional teacher is about – connecting and communicating with
the children, offering them what you know so they can improve their skills and knowledge.
2. The Characteristics of a professional teacher:
As mentioned above, not everyone is born with the qualities needed to be a good teacher, but
certain skills can always be evolved and learned.
Being able to think objectively instead of subjectively in certain situations and the vice versa, as well
as knowing when to think subjectively and when to think objectively is imperative when aspiring to
be a good teacher one day. You have to be able to put your feelings aside and place yourself in the
learners’ shoes to be able to appreciate the work they’ve done, because not all learners think the
same or are on the same level of thinking.
As a professional teacher, you have to be able to lead by example and practice what you preach.
Learners won’t respect you as teacher if you cannot do what is expected of you, whilst at the same
time you expect them to do as they are told. Showing that you are willing and enthusiastic makes all
the difference in the world regarding their attitude towards the work you’re doing as well as the
classroom.
Creating an environment which feels safe for learning is also a quality (as well as a skill) that you
cannot go without when wanting to be a teacher. You have to be able to keep in mind, that most
children come out of abusive environments off of the school grounds, as a professional teacher, you
have to be able to create a place where the children feel safe to learn and feel that they can really
make a difference, when they put the needed effort into their work. Where effort, hard work and
good behaviour does not go unrewarded.
3. My Needs to become a professional Teacher:
First and foremost you have to qualify and earn the right to be able to teach, the minimum
requirement for teaching is a Bachelor’s Degree in Education which takes up to 4 years to
completion. Doing a B.Ed. qualification, you get to choose one from the following phases:
