CHAPTER 10: NATURE OF
SCIENCE

SLO 10.1: Physics and its Interaction:
10.1.1 describe Physics as the study of
matter, energy, space, time and their
interactions.

Physics Physikos
Nature.
Physics: It is the study of matter, energy, space, time,
along with the interactions between them.

Matter: Anything that has weight and occupies space
 Solid: Coal

 Liquid: Petrol

 Gas: CNG

 Plasma: Ionic state of matter

Energy: Capacity to do work

Space: Where things exist or move
 Example: Coal/petrol/CNG occupies space when

placed in a container

, Time: How long events take
 Example: How long coal takes to produce energy

when heated

Examples of interaction:
 Heating coal produces energy (fire/heat)

 Heating petrol produces energy (used in vehicles)

 Heating CNG gas produces energy (used for

cooking/fuel)

SLO 10.2.1: Physics as a Subset of
Natural Science:
Physics is a branch of natural science. Natural science is
the study of nature and the universe.

Natural science is divided into different branches, such
as:
 Physics

 Chemistry

 Biology

 Earth Science

 Astronomy

Physics is also known as a physical science because it
studies matter, energy, space, time, and their
interactions.
