Assessment Overview Unit 1 - The history of Psychology in Africa: this unit examines the historical development of psychology in Africa, particularly in South Africa, and argues that the discipline of psychology is not neutral but shaped by colonial and political forces. It explains how psychology was imported from Europe through colonial universities and institutions, bringing Western worldviews that often ignored or undermined African knowledge systems. In countries like Egypt, Zambia, and especially South Africa, psychological theories and practices (including intelligence testing and psychiatric classification) were used to justify racial segregation, apartheid, and colonial control. In response to these issues, African scholars began advocating for an Afrocentric psychology that reflects local cultures, histories, and lived experiences. Overall, Unit 1 shows how psychology in Africa has been deeply entangled with power, oppression, and the need for decolonisation. Unit 2 - African Psychology: this unit introduces African psychology that is grounded in African history, culture, spirituality, and indigenous knowledge systems. It explains that African psychology seeks to move beyond Western-dominated models by centring African realities, values, and lived experiences in understanding human cognition, emotion, and behaviour. The unit distinguishes between traditional Western psychology and indigenous African approaches, highlighting key perspectives. Indigenous African psychology is described as holistic, communal, spiritually informed, and intergenerational. The unit also traces the major phases in the development of African psychology, from pre-colonial indigenous systems to the dominance of Western scientific psychology during colonisation, to contemporary efforts to integrate and decolonise the discipline. Overall, the unit emphasises that African psychology aims to promote communal well-being, cultural continuity, and context-relevant psychological knowledge rooted in African worldviews such as Ubuntu. Here are the assessment questions. Question 1 (5marks) Discuss the goals and importance of African psychology in society. Question 2 (10marks) In your own words, compare and contrast the

The Goals and Importance of African Psychology in Society

Introduction

Psychology has historically been shaped by Western ideas and
perspectives. For a long time, psychological theories and practices
introduced in Africa ignored African cultures, traditions, and lived
experiences. During colonialism and apartheid, psychology was
sometimes used to justify racial discrimination and inequality. Because
of this history, many African scholars began to advocate for the
development of African psychology. African psychology focuses on
understanding human behaviour from African cultural perspectives and
emphasises indigenous knowledge systems, spirituality, and communal
life. This essay discusses the goals of African psychology and explains
why it is important for African societies today.

Understanding African Psychology

African psychology is a way of studying human thoughts, emotions, and
behaviour that is grounded in African history, culture, and values.
Unlike traditional Western psychology, which often focuses on the
individual, African psychology places strong emphasis on the
community and relationships between people. It recognises that
individuals exist within families, communities, and cultural traditions
that influence their behaviour and identity.

A key idea within African psychology is the philosophy of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu highlights the belief that a person becomes fully human through
relationships with others. It promotes values such as compassion,
respect, cooperation, and shared responsibility. Therefore, African
