stimulates a group of primordial follicles (~20) to begin maturing.
o Primordial Follicle = 1 oocyte surrounded by simple squamous cells
(called follicular cells).
The follicular cells begin dividing, becoming a stratified epithelium
surrounding the 1° oocyte = Primary follicle

The follicular cells continue to divide (now about 6-12 layers of cells) and
irregular, fluid-filled spaces appear between them = secondary follicle
(Only a few of the 1° follicles proceed to this step).


Maturation of the follicle takes about 10 -14 days (typically only 1- 1° follicle
reaches this stage), at which time its fluid-filled cavity creates a bulge in the
ovary surface = mature follicle or Graafian follicle
o Until now the 1 oocyte has been halted in Meiosis I.
o As the mature follicle completes its development, LH levels rise, and the 1
oocyte completes Meiosis I in the mature follicle.
o At the end of Meiosis I there is a 2 oocyte (haploid) and non-functional
polar body.

Ovulation occurs (due to surge in LH from anterior pituitary) as the mature
follicle wall ruptures and releases the 2 oocyte into pelvic cavity, which is

(yellow body).

Corpus luteum produces progesterone and estrogen which prepares the
body for pregnancy by stimulating the maturation of the uterine lining and
secretion of uterine glands.

Unless pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum will degenerate about 12 days
after ovulation.
o Progesterone and estrogen levels fall
o The corpus luteum degenerates (into the Corpus albicans), marking end
of ovarian cycle.
o A new cycle begins with the stimulation of a new group of primordial
follicles by FSH
