Discrete data can be classified as data that is measured and reportable. The data is
calculated and generated for specific reporting with numerical values. Some examples of discrete
data in healthcare are information reflected within the electronic health system, as it relates to lab
reporting, medication prescribed, instructions on dosage, and inpatient hospitalizations.
Continuous Data is classified as data encompassing any value that falls within a
particular range and is not restricted to definite countable values. Some Examples of continuous
data in healthcare are a patient's blood pressure, weight, and height. (Hoskin, 2018)
A2: Scales Of Measurement
• Nominal – is categorical data that is a discrete data type reflecting item names. Data is
incompatible and lacks an innate sequence. Examples: Current Procedural
Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD), gender, and color
• Ordinal – is a discrete data type that reflects inconsistent categories that promote an
innate sequence demonstrating a specific order or ranking. Examples include Body
