WGU AMT2 Task 2: Major Risk Factors
& Service Line Development Analysis

Service Line Development (Western Governors University)

, Major Risk Factors

Last year, Trinity Community Hospital conducted a focused community health needs

assessment. This assessment targeted the oncology, cardiovascular, and orthopedic service lines

within the hospital's primary service region. The findings have identified several risk factors that

will impact patient care.

Oncology Risk Factors:

The demand for oncology services is projected to rise sharply due to the aging population

in our primary service area. In the next five years, 15% of the population will be 65 or older.

Consequently, cancer cases are expected to increase by approximately 34%, from 3,200 cases

this year to 4,282 cases in five years. Statistically, about 50% of men and 33% of women are

expected to develop cancer during their lifetimes.

Given this significant increase, there will be a heightened need for caregivers. Currently,

physician practices are operating at full capacity, and efforts to recruit additional physicians are

underway. To meet the growing demand, there will also be a need for more equipment,

educational programs, and essential staff to provide comprehensive care for these patients.

Orthopedic Risk Factors:

Orthopedic services are projected to experience rapid growth over the next five years.

Cases are expected to increase by approximately 46%, rising from 11,800 this year to 17,338 in

five years. Inpatient services, including joint and spine procedures, are anticipated to grow by

30%. Outpatient services are expected to see a substantial increase of 350%, also encompassing

joint and spine procedures.

The existing resources for orthopedic services will not be able to meet this rapidly

growing demand. The top priority is to hire more physicians to accommodate the increased need
