Trends and Strategies
A. Introduction
Trinity Community Hospital is a 150-bed facility that is considering expansion, including
the addition of a new service line in Orthopedics, Cardiology, or Oncology. A strategic plan,
community needs assessment, and five-year program plan have all been prepared, reviewed,
and analyzed in the evaluation of which service line would be the most viable option to
pursue. With all these things considered, a formal recommendation is being presented for
buy-in and approval to add an Orthopedic service line at Trinity Community Hospital. The
evidence to support this decision can be found within this analysis.
A1. Demand
As outlined in the Community Needs Assessment, there are significant needs at Trinity
Community Hospital in all three proposed service lines. The recommendation to add an
Orthopedic service line was due in part to the projected demand, potential for physician
privileges, and revenue potential. Most notably, orthopedic cases are expected to increase
from 11,800 to 17,338 over the next 5 years, a rise of 46%. Inpatient joint and spine
procedures are also projected to expand by 30%. Outpatient orthopedic procedures are
expected to rise by a shocking 350%. Each patient requiring inpatient or outpatient
procedures has a high probability of also needing post-operative rehabilitation services to
improve outcomes.
Currently, 13% of the population in the service region of TCH is over 65 years of age.
Within the next 5 years, this will rise to 15% with an overall population growth of 4%.
Patients under 18 make up 24% of the population in the service region. These two age groups
