Leadership Skills and Mindset Reflection

C. Leadership and Management. Complete the following:

1. Explain the differences between the roles of a leader and a manager.

Leadership and management differ primarily in the areas they focus on. Management tends to
be more driven towards promoting the organization's values and financial gain. It is also a
formal appointment which comes with a recognized title. Team members in leadership positions
tend to arise organically rather than through an appointment or promotion. Leaders are usually
self-motivated and desire to support their co-workers through encouragement, respect, and
advocacy. Leaders are easily approachable to co-workers and may be more relatable to the
average staff member than management. Leaders focus their mission on their co-workers
wellbeing and patient safety and satisfaction.

2. Identify three present leadership skills and three present management skills (i.e., skills you
possess).

Leadership skills I feel I currently possess are:

1. Motivating co-workers, 2. Advocating and supporting my co-workers, and finally, 3.
Consistently following the rules of the organization and nursing prudent practices for patient
safety, care and satisfaction to lead by example.

Management skills I feel I currently possess are:

1. Problem solving skills, 2. Delegation and 3. Communication skills.

A. Provide an example of how you use each of the leadership and management skills
identified in part C2 in your practice.
Leadership Skills I use in my everyday practice
1. Motivating my co-workers daily is a task I enjoy and do my best to employ each day. I
genuinely care for nearly every one of my co-workers and take time to observe them in the
morning to get a handle on how they may be feeling that day. Simple words of encouragement,
such as "great job" or "you really helped that patient understand their discharge instructions",
can brighten their day and help to reinforce the reasons we all became nurses to begin with, to
care for patients.

2. Speaking up for my co-workers is a skill I have never had a problem with. Upper management
can sometimes be out of touch with the average staff nurse; they may be so far removed from
