Therapeutic relationship
★​ Essential for effective counselling, requiring warmth, trust, and a good rapport
between client and therapist.
★​ The client needs to feel comfortable and confident to openly discuss issues,
including difficult emotions.

Emotional Support
★​ The counsellor encourages the client to explore and express emotions, providing
emotional support.
★​ Listening is critical to help the client feel understood and validated.

Relapse Prevention
★​ Gives client space to discuss previous relapses and warning signs
★​ Together the client and therapist will work together to create a recovery plan


Evaluating COUNSELLING

Practical uses (strength)
★​ Flexible – can be adapted for different clients and needs
★​ Can be combined with other treatments (e.g., CBT, nicotine substitutes)
★​ Can be delivered to individuals, groups, or families
★​ Warm, open, client-centred relationship increases engagement and adherence​



Lack of effectiveness (weakness)
★​ Limited evidence for effectiveness
★​ Core benefit (non-judgemental relationship) is hard to measure scientifically
★​ No strong evidence that counselling is better than other interventions for
addiction
