A. Lesson Plan for Fourth Grade Math
Instructional Model: Gradual Release
Standard: 4.NBT.4.A.2.
Compare two multi-digit numbers based on the meanings of the digits in each place, using >,
=, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons (National Governors Association Center
for Best Practices & Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010).
Lesson Objective: Fourth graders will be able to write and compare two multi-digit numbers up
to the 10,000s place using >,<,=.
Lesson Components/Breakdown
Step 1: Direct Instruction “I do”
Duration 10 minutes
Activities: I will begin by explaining the meaning of place value by using
a place value chart. Then I will model comparing two multi-
digit numbers. (4,352 and 4,821) by comparing the digits step
by step.
1. 4000 = 4000
2. 300 < 800, so stop here
3. Conclusion: 4,352 < 4,821
After going through these steps, I will demonstrate how to
record the comparison using the correct symbol. Then I will
show another example
Step 2: Guided Practice “We do”
Duration: 15 minutes
Activities: I will provide pairs of numbers for students to compare in
their small groups. (12,456 and 12,987)
I will provide place value charts for the students to guide them
students/groups through the comparison process, and I will be
asking questions out loud like “Which digit in the thousands
place is larger? Then, students will be recording their
comparisons using >,<, and = symbols on their worksheets.
We will then check answers as a class and pause to discuss
any misconceptions.
Step 3: Collaborative Practice “You do together”
Duration 15 minutes
Activities: In pairs the students will complete a number comparison game
where they draw two multi-digit numbers from a deck of
