SECTION A: REFLECTION
QUESTION 1
1.1 Sections found difficult to understand
One section of the ENG1501 study guide that I found challenging was the section on
poetic devices and figurative language, particularly symbolism and metaphor. While
definitions were provided, the explanations sometimes felt abstract and difficult to apply
to actual poems. For example, distinguishing between literal meaning and implicit
meaning required careful rereading and practice. This section could be simplified by
including more step-by-step examples that show how to identify a device and then
explain its effect. Short practice exercises with model answers after each concept would
also help students gain confidence and understanding.
1.2 Most useful Additional Resources
The most useful additional resources during my study of this module were the recorded
tutorial videos and sample exam answers provided on myUnisa. The tutorial videos
were especially helpful because the lecturers explained poems and prose texts slowly
and clearly, demonstrating how to structure answers using quotations. The sample
answers helped me understand what examiners expect in terms of depth and clarity. I
also found the discussion forum useful, as reading other students’ questions helped
clarify areas I had not fully understood.
1.3 Experience of the WhatsApp Channel
My experience of the WhatsApp Channel as a learning support tool was largely positive.
Important reminders, exam tips, and clarifications were posted regularly, which helped
keep me focused and informed. The frequency of posts was balanced and not

other students and the responses provided by lecturers made me feel less isolated and
