QUESTION 1
1.1) I agree with Schulman’s statement that classroom teaching is no easy task.
Teachers deal with a diversity of learners within the classroom from all kinds
of social economic backgrounds on an everyday basis. Teachers have to be
aware of these diversities and different cultures within the classroom in order
to communicate and teach all learners. For example, teachers can’t just start
explaining and talking about a certain television program. Not all leaners will
have access to the program as not all learners are equally privileged.
Teachers also deal with learners with different personalities. The reason why
this could be a challenge is because leaners react differently. Some learners
work hard, and some just don’t care which becomes a challenge for the
teacher at the end of the day.
Teachers also deal with different academic abilities within the classroom. Not
all learners catch on and understand work first time round. An example would
be within maths where one leaner is able to do the work after it was explained
once, but a second learner might need more help and maybe an extra class
or two, which takes time out of the teacher’s day.
Lack of content knowledge within teachers sometimes occurs more often than
expected. Teachers might be too busy to familiarise themselves with the
needed content before a lesson. Teachers need to be prepared before
lessons in order to have a successful lesson. An example of this can be when
the learners arrive for class and the teacher is going through papers and
mumbling not giving learners actual work. This makes learners nervous and
anxious.
Another element which leads to teaching being challenging, can be a lack of
technology. For example, without technology teachers have to spend more
time writing work and answers on the board where they could have projected
everything onto a screen and perhaps emailed the work to learners after
working through it.

1.2) The value of learning theories within my classroom would be that it helps me
as the teacher to improve the way in which learners will learn and perceive
the work being taught.

I would apply the behaviorism theory within my class and apply both positive
and negative reinforcement. I would have a recycling system within the class.
Learners who throw away their packets and papers into the correct boxes
rather than throwing it around will be rewarded a star, and learners not
obliging will lose a star. The learners with the most stars at the end of the year
will receive recognition at the price giving.

When looking at the cognitive theory I would apply Howard Gardner’s (1943)
theory within my classroom to the best of my abilities. I agree that all learners
are different and get stimulated by different things. Firstly, I would try to
decorate the walls of the class with colorful maps, pictures, mathematical and
linguistic posters. I would also try and give my lessons in a creative and
intriguing way and also find out from learners what their interest are. I would
go that extra mile to ensure all learners are enjoying the lessons and are
relating and understanding the work being taught. I would even incorporate
soothing, and relaxing music to stimulate learners.

1.3.1) Practical skills which are important for teachers will include:

• Successful classroom management
• Effective teaching practices
• Good technology skills
• Meaningful assessments
• Content knowledge

Good classroom management is an important skill for teachers as it allows them
to take charge within the classroom. Classroom management helps the teacher
to manage not only the time and activities but also how students react and
behave within the classroom. For example, through effective classroom
management the teacher can ensure that students complete tasks in a timely
manner while working in groups.

Through using different teaching practices, the teacher can motivate learners to
think out the box and help them to develop their critical thinking and problem-
solving capabilities. An example of this might be where the teacher allows the
learners to engage not only with the work but also with other students and share
their ideas and thoughts with everyone while giving positive feedback and
encouraging individual learners as well as teamwork.

Good technology skills allow teachers to project the work to students in a more
modern way. Today’s learners are much more tech savvy and would prefer
technology within the classroom. For example, where the teacher would simply
explain the work and write on the white board, they can now use technology to
