, Sociology of Education

QUESTION 1

1.1 Definition of Sociology (2)

Sociology can be defined as the systematic and scientific study of society, social
relationships, and patterns of social interaction. It focuses on understanding how
individuals behave within groups, how social institutions such as family, education,
religion, and the economy function, and how society influences human behaviour while
individuals simultaneously shape society.

1.2 Meaning of Education (2)

Education refers to a continuous social process through which knowledge, skills, values,
norms, and attitudes are transmitted from one generation to another. It equips
individuals with intellectual abilities, social skills, and moral values necessary to
participate meaningfully in society and contribute to social development.

1.3 Explanation of Terms (6)

a) Assimilation (2)
Assimilation is the process through which individuals or groups gradually adopt the
cultural values, language, norms, and practices of the dominant group in society. It often
occurs in institutions such as schools where common values are promoted.
Example: Learners from different cultural backgrounds adopting the dominant language
of instruction and school culture.

b) Society (2)
Society refers to an organised group of people who share common norms, values,
beliefs, institutions, and social relationships that guide behaviour and ensure social
order.
Example: South African society, governed by shared laws, education systems, and
cultural practices.
