COURSE3DESCRIPTION
The3purpose3of3this3course3is3to3examine3the3lives3of3girls3and3women.3We3will3include3topics3
such3as3gender3stereotypes,3the3development3of3gender3roles,3gender3comparisons,3women3and3
work,3love3relationships,3sexuality,3women’s3physical3and3mental3health,3violence3against3wo
men,3and3women3in3later3adulthood.3Students3who3take3this3course3should3acquire3a3better3und
erstanding3about3girls,3women,3and3gender3in3North3America.
As3the3course3instructor,3I’m3hopeful3that3each3of3you3will3work3toward3the3following3goals:
1. To3understand3the3relevant3information3about3the3lives3of3girls3and3women—
as3well3as3gender—with3a3particular3emphasis3on3the3complexity3of3the3issues.
2. To3develop3critical-
thinking3skills,3so3that3you3can3evaluate3both3the3research3in3professional3journals3and3infor
mation3described3in3the3popular3media.
3. To3know3how3to3design3your3own3psychology3research3project,3to3conduct3the3research,3an
d3to3write3an3appropriately3professional3summary3of3your3own3research,3emphasizing3the3
potential3methodological3flaws3and3strengths3in3your3study.
