Frontal lobe-self-awareness (physical and emotional sensation) and executive functions (focusing,
planning, judgment, decision making, social functioning). The frontal lobes regulates expression of
emotion and motor behavior. Implicated in psychiatric syndromes like schizophrenia and disorders of
attention, OCD, mood disorders
Parietal lobes-coordination of sensation and motor behavior (such as coordination of language functions),
spatial orientation, and recognition of people and objects.
Temporal lobes-memory, learning, and language. Clinically, euphoria, auditory hallucinations, and
delusions implicated here.
Occipital-vision and visual memory
The forebrain-Reward-various tracks (mesocortical and mesolimbic tracts) involved in processing of
pleasurable experience and reward. This tract has clinical importance in depression, mania, and
schizophrenia.
Mesolimbic and mesocortical tracts-reinforcement. Implicated in the positive symptoms of schizophrenia,
such as hallucinations (mesolimbic) and the deficit symptoms, like flat affect (mesocortical)
Purpose of the Psychiatric Interview
“to gather information necessary to understand, diagnose, and treat the client”
Divided into 3 phases, assessment, ranking, and transition (A.R.T)
Focuses on the client’s biopsychosocial history and current mental status. Comprehensive assessment of
the clients lifetime biologic, psychological, and social functioning.
Identifying data (demographics), chief complaint, HPI, psych hx, etoh and substance use hx, medical
history, family history, developmental history, social hx, occupational and educational hx, culture,
spirituality and values
