A.
A Walk in the Words by Hudson Talbott
Illustrated by Hudson Talbott

B.
1. This story is an autobiography. The author, Hudson Talbot, outlines the struggles
of a student with a learning disability, specifically dyslexia. In the book, Hudson
overcomes his challenges and encourages others to follow his example.

a. I want students to recognize that individuals with disabilities are just like
themselves but facing unique challenges. This book helps students see the
struggles of a child with a learning disability from the perspective of a peer.
Children with disabilities have unique challenges that can include adapting to the
way their classmates and community treat them. Hudson describes his challenges
seeming to stack and grow into a wall. When he learns to adapt by tackling
challenges in his own way and at his own pace, the metaphorical wall breaks down
and appears as a path to success: “I took time to look for words that I knew. There
they were! Like steppingstones leading me onward.” (Talbott 2021) This book can
help portray learning disabilities as challenges not handicaps. Through the
narrative, students can identify that many people face learning disabilities and
that there are many manifestations of learning disability. Students can learn from
Hudson’s example to adapt and overcome challenges.

2. Determination
a. Determination was a clear theme in Hudson Talbott’s book. In one example,
Talbott compares the way his tenacious approach to improving one of his
skills could become a similar method for improving in reading and writing. “I
remembered how my horses got better the more I drew them. My writing
could improve too, if I wrote every day... I read every day, in search of new
words for my stories. It was like finding new colors for my art...” (Talbott,
2021)

3. Talbott’s book is, itself, an excellent example of the affect illustrations can have
on readers of all ages. Talbott describes within “A Walk in the Words” the way
he excelled at drawing and describes the way that his improvement in reading
and writing enhanced his storytelling through art and vice versa. Great
illustrations “spark joy, enrich the reading experience and encourage a child to
read...” (Frandsen, 2023) Additionally, research supports that illustrations can
improve reading comprehension and retention: “...children in the Illustrated
condition recalled more story events than those in the Non-Illustrated condition.
These results suggest that illustrations enhance... story recall in an interactive
story reading context.” (Greenhoot 2014)

, Figure 1: Talbott (2021), Stories with Star (2022)

This illustration can help students visualize the effects of being determined in the
pursuit of their goals. In this image, rough facsimiles of horses evolve into an
image of a soaring pegasus though determined practice. In the same way that
Mr. Talbott enhanced his skills by being determined to practice and improve,
students can learn that the tenacious pursuit of their goals can help them
overcome challenges and lead to success.

4. Nonfiction,
autobiography a.
1. The author refers to himself in the first person
2. The author shares information about himself and key events in his life
(blurb 2024) b.
1. “I read every day, in search of new words for my stories”
2. “I took time to look for words that I knew. There they were! Like stepping
stones leading me onward.”
